Struggling to sleep? 3 things that could help beat insomnia

If you are one of the millions of people worldwide who struggle to fall asleep, then you will know only too well how much of an impact it can have on every aspect of your life. The right amount of sleep helps us focus, concentrate, and, together with food, provides us with the energy we need to get through the day.

Lack of sleep can make you stressed, anxious, and severely lethargic, which can also affect your mental health and general demeanour. Thankfully there are lots of things that may help to alleviate the problem.

Here are 3 things that could help beat insomnia.

Create a relaxing space

Is your bedroom a peaceful and tranquil space that you feel relaxed and comfortable in? Or does it consist of mismatched furniture, bare walls, and is filled to the brim with lots of clutter? If it’s the latter, it’s worthwhile giving it an overhaul. When your room is tidy, aesthetically pleasing, and feels like more of a retreat, it can help to promotef sleep.

Declutter where possible and fill the room with things you love. Make your blinds or curtains completely block any light and have some soft lighting by your bed. You might be surprised at the difference a tranquil setting can make.

Is your mattress comfortable?

If you are waking with aches and pains in the morning or tossing and turning because you can’t find a comfortable position, your mattress could be part of the problem. As we get older, we require different levels of body support, so if your mattress is more than 10 years old, it could be time for a new one.

Pocket sprung mattresses are one of the best mattresses you can buy. The more springs they have, the more support and comfort they will give your body. Memory foam mattresses are also popular, although they can cause excessive sweating, so they won’t be suitable for everyone.

More of the best mattresses can be found on The Dozy Owl, an award-winning blog that has a tonne of great sleep-related information that could help you find the mattress that’s perfect for you.

A good night time routine

Insomnia can make it more difficult to develop any kind of bedtime routine, but it’s worth persevering. If you enjoy a regular cup of tea or coffee, restrict your intake throughout the day. The effects of caffeine can last for hours, so from mid-afternoon, drink water instead.

A warm bath before bed will help to ease your muscles and make you feel calm. Bath oils and candles that contain scents such as lavender and chamomile are particularly good at relaxing the body and mind, so are also worth a try.

Using electronics before you go to bed can stimulate your brain and make it harder to drift off to sleep, so if you enjoy having some screen time before you fall asleep, switch to reading a book instead. It could vastly reduce the number of hours you spend counting sheep!
