5 Tips and Ideas For Kids Painting At Home

Kids love painting at home. As parents or teachers, it is your responsibility to make it fun for them. Nurturing your kid’s creativity at a tender age can lead to their early childhood development.

Plus, you and your kid get to have an awesome time together. What else can be a better way to bond?

Sometimes parents avoid this amazing activity with kids thinking about the mess it may create. It really doesn’t have to be that stressful.

Taking precautions beforehand and choosing the right painting ideas will make your job both easy and enjoyable. Follow a few tips given below and get ready to have the best time ever with your kid!

Tips To Paint With Toddlers

Prior preparation helps a lot in easy cleanup later. If you follow a few tips, it won’t cause you much trouble. You’ll enjoy the whole process instead.

Tip 1: Get the Painting Area Ready

It’s a toddler’s tendency to spread and splash colors while they paint. So, if you place a mat on your carpet it’ll turn all the fun into sadness in no time. Specify a chair and a table for them to color.

A high chair often works but it shouldn’t be too uncomfortable for them. Otherwise, they’ll lose interest in painting.

Even if you use a table, it doesn’t mean colors won’t splash on the floor. Use a table cover, a splash mat, a towel or a blanket to protect your floor from the spills.

If you have a backyard, utilize it. A mat painted with your kid’s footstep sounds fun, right? You can paint it in the backyard.

Tip 2: Wear Protective gears

It’s nothing like going to war but honestly, it’s no less than a war zone when your kid is painting! So, you should be prepared in every way possible.

Kids often wipe their hands with their shirts while painting. Allow them to color as much as they want but make them wear protective gear at the beginning like full sleeve painting shirts or goggles. Painting pants aren’t required. Just leave them on diapers.

Tip 3: Canvas Size

If you notice a kid’s handwriting, you’ll see they love to write in larger fonts. Gradually their writing style changes with age but initially, they need large size pages to write or paint.

Pick a large canvas or XL notebooks at an early age. You can put dates on each page and give a painting task to your kid to complete each day. This way, you can see the change in your kid’s artwork over time.

Start with colorful handprints and then gradually move on to other patterns with brushes.

Tip 4: Color Quantity

Don’t be confused about how much color to provide to your child. Use as much as you can clean later. This is the biggest trick.

If you give them a bucket full of color it’s going to create a big mess to wipe later. Pour a little at a time. This page can help you pick from various coloring kits for kids from acrylics to watercolors.

If they’re using acrylic paints, squeeze a little quantity of 2-3 colors each day on a plate. One paintbrush is enough. Let them use their hands too. Then observe how they use the colors on their own. Guide them initially on how to pour colors and paint. Slowly they’ll learn to do it by themselves.

Use non-toxic and organic colors. Your kid can recognize body parts if you mix colors to yogurt and let your kid paint on a plastic doll with them. It’s cleaner and safer that way.

Tip 5: Participate with Your Kid if you’re painting at home

The whole point of painting at home is that your kid learns to paint while bonding with you. Remember that kids learn from their parents. So, you’re their biggest inspiration.

Don’t just hand them the colors and leave them alone with it. Your constant guidance and participation will help them in their development.

If you’re too busy just take 15 minutes off a day and join in this messy activity with your kid. It’ll be a mental refreshment for both you and your toddler.

A few Ideas To Start With

Here are a few innovative painting ideas your kid will love.

#1. Spring Salt painting

Gather a few items like- salt, glue, watercolors, paintbrushes, and spring templates to start with a salt painting. First, print the spring templates. It can be anything like- flowers, butterflies, rainbow, or whatever resembles spring.

Then squeeze some glue from a bottle with a smaller tip to follow the printed lines. You can help them with this part to keep it neat. Now sprinkle a generous amount of salt over the image and scoop the rest for another salt craft.

Paint with watercolors next. They’ll be surprised to see how the color spreads like magic when they touch the paintbrush tip to the salt. Let it dry and their first craft is done!

#2. Fork Painting

This is another way your kids can enjoy painting. To begin with, try a van Gogh “Starry Night” painting with your kid t. You’ll need scrapbook papers, acrylic paints, paint trays, paint brushes, wooden boards, tape, and most importantly a fork.

First use painter’s tape to tape around the painting area. Draw out hills, trees, the moon, and the circles of stars using a pencil. Use simple patterns.

Tell your kid to start pouring thick layers of paints over the lines. Now using forks they can make circular, wavy, straight starry patterns to create a cool 3D effect.

Wet paint creates a better texture. So, remember to create the fork strokes while the paints are still wet. Finally, let the paints dry after they finish.

#3. Thumb Painting

Bring out your kid’s imagination by using their fingers. Print out a tree template without leaves at first. Next, you need acrylic, poster, or watercolors. The same color of different shades looks amazing as leaves.

Take different shades of green to start with. Pour the colors in a palette. Tell them to dip the index finger or their thumb into the paints and press their fingers lightly by the sides of the branches.

Pick non-toxic colors for this activity to ensure your child’s safety.

To Conclude

There are actually no hard and fast rules for kids to paint their hearts out. The purpose of this activity is to let their imaginations bloom. Help them out in the process and we’re sure the final outcome will be exciting and therapeutic for both you and your child.
