How to Clean the House After Construction and Renovation

How to Clean the House After Construction and Renovation

Everyone knows that house cleaning after construction can be hard, especially when you’re looking forward to moving into your freshly built or renovated living space. Construction dust, stuffy ventilation systems, messy floors, and possibly even stains from cement or paint- all this can become a real headache once you attempt to do the cleaning after building work.

Whether you decide to order cleaning services after remodeling or do work all by yourself, Clapham Cleaners has prepared 5 tips that you can use to deal with post-renovation. These easy steps will help save your time and achieve the best results in any given case.

Tip Number One: The Best Way to Clean Dust After Construction Is Dry Dusting.

If you are cleaning dust off the walls, ceiling, or other light surfaces in your house, always remember to start with dry dusting. Excess moisture and harsh chemicals found in most cleaning products can leave greasy grey stains, damage the surfaces, and create more problems than they solve.

Light microfiber towels are usually the most suitable appliances to remove dust. They are designed to be gentle on any surface, absorb the dust, and leave no stains after cleaning. In the absence of a microfiber towel, a simple cotton cleaning cloth can save the day. You can create a cleaning cloth from an old t-Shirt or get one in the local supermarket.

Tip Number Two: Wipe the Furniture with a Multi-Purpose Cleaning Product to Clean the Construction Dust.

Cleaning after construction can get very confusing when it comes to furniture. Many questions appear right after you’ve received the key to your renovated place. How do you clean the construction dust that has settled in layers on top of your furniture? What cleaning product should you use? Which kind of towel, cloth, or sponge works best? Don’t worry; we have a ready solution for you.

In order to make the easiest choice that works for practically all types of furniture and all the materials, use a multi-purpose cleaning product and a cotton cleaning cloth. It’s hard to make a mistake with a multi-purpose cleaning product, as it is well adjusted for most types of problems, stains, and imperfections. After cleaning, you can use a special product made of wax to polish the wooden surfaces and a glass cleaning liquid to add shine to the fresh look of shelves and mirrors.

Tip Number Three: Take Care of the Ventilation System After Building Work.

This final touch often remains forgotten or postponed till the very last moment. Changing the air filters and cleaning off the dust from the ventilation system and ceiling fan is essential not only for the cleanness of your house but also for your respiratory system’s health. Coughing, allergies, and even lung issues can be partially linked to the lack of ventilation control. Make sure you wash the grids with a multi-purpose cleaning product and dry them well before attaching them to the ventilation window. Replace the filters with the new ones as part of your post remodel cleaning, and don’t forget to change them every couple of years.

Tip Number Four: Clean and Polish the Windows With Care as Part of Your Post-Renovation Cleaning.

Windows are usually the second thing after floors to be covered with dust and all sorts of stains: paint, cement, glue, and even scratches can affect their look. Depending on your situation, consider using a scraper to get rid of the dried particles that stick to the window frame or the glass itself. If there are some drops of paint left from the construction, you can gently remove them using acetone and an ear stick.

Then, use the same microfiber tissue that you used for the furniture to wipe the frames and windows — step one: dry brushing. Step two: use some lemon water or a ready-to-use window cleaning solution to clean the glass. Be careful when you buy a window cleaning solution from the store, as some of them can leave watery white traces on glass and create a messy look even in the most beautiful apartment.

Tip Number Five: Leave Floor Vacuuming and Cleaning for the End.

Some people intuitively begin dealing with after the construction mess with floors. However, it can be a big mistake. Cleaning floors should be done only after removing the dust, cleaning the windows, wiping and polishing the furniture, and removing the old air filters. Once all the listed tasks are complete, begin with vacuuming the floors thoroughly and adding extra attention to corners and turns.

Then, mop the floors with water and floor detergent of your choice. We strongly do not recommend adding bleach or other alcohol-based solutions to clean wooden floors. It is better to choose a detergent that is matching the type of surface that you have. After the mopping is done, you can polish the floors with a microfiber cloth and add a bit of wax to make them shiny and bright.
