Your living room is the space where you spend most of your time if you’re not in the kitchen or bedroom. You’re probably spending your time vegging out on the sofa, watching the new Netflix special, or perhaps dwindling away your quarantine hours by playing video games on your new, oversized flatscreen.
Or, maybe you’re enjoying more time with your family in that space. Either way, the living room is likely to be a place that you’ll spend more time this year as most people are transitioning to a working from home environment. So, consider this an opportunity to make your living room a more pleasant environment for you and the family. Here are some ways to spice up your living room this year.
Refresh your furniture
One of the best ways to reinvigorate an old space is to re-furnish some or all of it. Now, you don’t have to go out and buy a whole new sofa and a coffee table and a pair of end tables and so-on and so-forth.
One great way to save money and save the planet this year might be to consider buying used furniture. This will allow you to give old furniture new life and reinvigorate the space. It might be worth choosing a style before you go buying your used furniture. Do you want old and antique, or chic and modern? Either way, you’re certain to find something worth recycling in your new living space.
Knock down those walls
Another way to breathe new life into your living room is to give it a bigger footprint. Open concept planning is now the go-to for most interior designers, whereas in the past living rooms had been kept tight and cramped, now they are often open areas leading into kitchens or other rooms in the house, without much of a wall there. Get a few friends over, a few sledgehammers, and have a jolly good time, make it a weekend of destruction therapy, and knock down those walls!
Let in the light
Light is good for us humans. So, be sure that your new living space will have plenty of windows. Traditional square windows are a thing of the past. Depending on your view, you may opt for bay windows, or something a bit more unique. Windows come in all shapes and sizes, so don’t be afraid to get creative with your portals to the outside world. Also, consider whether you want curtains or blinds to shut the light out as the day wanes into the night. Curtains and blinds are a huge decision and each has its merits. Larger windows usually befit the curtain look, while blinds are perfect for smaller windows.
If you can’t expand, get creative
While it is certainly true that expanding your living room space is the most desirable option to create an open-concept look, that doesn’t always have to be so. If you’re limited in how far you can go with your open-concept desires, there are a few things that you can do to give the illusion of more space.
First up, paint your ceilings white. There’s something about white paint that just gives it that big look. Next. put down an area rug in the middle of the floor, this will give a sense of scale to the room. Make a statement with a statement piece. This doesn’t have to be anything big and fancy, a glass-top coffee table, or even a chandelier has this effect. If your only limitation is space, it’s time to get crafty with how you use it.
Repaint the living room
Paint is a relatively inexpensive way to give an old space a new look. If you’re short on money but long on time, consider painting the entire living room in a new color (make sure to keep your ceilings white-ish to give an illusion of more space), but consider what’s trendy for paints and model after those, if it befits the space. There’s a lot of things that you can do with a living room that can cost a small fortune, but a few cans of paint can do a lot if you don’t have a lot of money.
