What To Do If You Need Sewer Line Repair

What To Do If You Need Sewer Line Repair

If your sewer line breaks, you’ll unfortunately know about it pretty quickly. The stench of the sewage line will be filling your whole home.

Most unfortunately, sewer lines breaking or cracking aren’t an uncommon occurrence. If you follow a couple of the tips below, you can take care of your sewer line before it breaks.

Common Signs Of Problems With Your Sewer Line

While a terrible smell is the most common issue with a bad sewage line, there are other issues that could start to arise if your line is cracked. If water has started to back up and spill in your basement or if your drains are extremely slow or are gurgling, then you should contact a plumber to check out the health of your drain.

If you’re starting to have plumbing issues, then a plumber will come to your house to perform a sewer video inspection. This involves the plumber pushing a line through your pipes that has a tiny camera at the end of it.

After the plumber has retrieved the footage from their inspection, they’ll be able to assess what needs to be fixed in your pipe. A typical video inspection can cost a couple hundred of dollars, but taking this preventative measure will save you a fair amount of money in the long run.

How To Avoid Clogging Your Pipes

Sometimes it’s unavoidable that one of your sewage pipes will burst, but you can still take preventative measures to save yourself a lot of money in the long run.

Don’t Use Harsh Chemical Products

Although many of these products are intended to unclog your drains, they can be so strong and harsh that they’ll cause erosion on your pipes over time. This will make it easier for your pipes to break later on.

Additionally, they don’t always clean out the entire pipe, so you may have to use the products repeatedly. As you continue this process, your pipes will become more fragile and the clog will never be completely gone.

If your pipes have begun to get clogged, calling a plumber is a better option than using harsh chemicals. If you have a general question about how to take care of your sewage pipes, contact your plumber through their website.

Frequently Use A Water Softener

Hard water will also reduce the overall lifespan of your pipes because it will start to erode them over time. Using a water softener will help them last even longer.

A traditional water softener unit will use sodium to break apart the minerals that are in your water so they won’t have corrosion. If you’re looking for a cheaper option consider getting an electric softener that sends a magnetic pulse through the pipes to break up the minerals instead.

Don’t Put Anything Down Your Pipes That Don’t Belong There

One of the simplest ways to preserve the life of your drains is to only put toilet paper (and the other things that take place in the bathroom) into your sewage pipes. This will be sure to increase the longevity of your pipes.
